How the Jar Works and Operates
The "Rig Rattler" drilling jar features a locking mechanism that effectively prevents hydraulic fluid bleed-off and misfires. The latch is preset to a range of firing loads. This ensures the jar will not fire until a force greater than the latch setting is exceeded. The jar is easy to use. To jar upward, simply pull the weight of the drill string plus the setting of the latch and wait for the jar to fire. Increasing the upward strain on the drill string beyond the latch setting will increase the impact and impulse of the jarring. To repeat the operation simply lower the drill string enough to close the jar and repeat the above procedure.
Operating the Bumper Sub
The jar has a built in bumper sub with a stroke of approximately 12-14". Picking up and dropping the weight of the drill string will cause a downward blow. This procedure can be repeated as often as is necessary by simply picking up the drilling string and dropping it again. When picking up the drill string it is reassuring to know that an upward jar will only occur when the latch setting is exceeded over and above the string weight. If the jar is fired through there is a 21" stroke down.
